Labor Day 5k

Don’t let that smile fool you. The Jumpstart 5k was no walk in the park. It was HOT and HUMID and HILLY.

Nonetheless I did place top in the women, yay! 22:08, no record there but I think the heat killed the competition.

5ks are rough when you actually care about your time. Its literally a prolonged sprint for way longer than a sprint should ever be. I’m glad that’s over with. Now on to the longer events…

Congrats! That’s an awesome time! I just experienced the same Labor Day race conditions of heat and humidity (and hills!) along with no PR. The 5k is such a tough distance, but I find it so exciting to see how long you can “sprint” for 🙂

Thank you! In the past I have enjoyed the challenge of “sprinting”, but this one was rough!! I find it so hard to maintain a good balance of training for distance and speed. I’m going to start incorporating some track workouts into my weekly schedule. Do you do speed work for your marathon training?

      • charissarunning says:

Yes! I actually love speedwork; I feel like it makes the miles go by faster. I have been doing it on the treadmill this summer but am excited to take it to the track as the temps get cooler. When gearing up for a 5k, my intervals will mostly be 400’s and 800’s, but for longer distance interval training I’ll do mainly 800’s, mile repeats, and sometimes branch out to 2400.
